Background of Thailand Geoparks

The concept of geological heritage conservation in Thailand was initiated in 2007, with efforts to promote the establishment of geoparks and the designation of 7 categories of geological conservation sites in 2010.Ubon Ratchathani Geopark was designated as the first local geopark in Thailand on 9 May 2011. Subsequently, on 17 April 2018, Satun Geopark was designated as the first UNESCO Global Geopark of Thailand. At present, Thailand has a total of 11 geoparks.

The concept of geological heritage conservation in Thailand was initiated.

The Act on the Protection of Fossils was promulgated.

The Department of Mineral Resources began promoting the establishment of geoparks and formally designated 7 categories of geological conservation sites.

Pha Chan–Sam Phan Bok Geopark, Ubon Ratchathani Province, was designated as Thailand’s first local geopark.

Satun Geopark, Satun Province, was designated as a local geopark.

Korat Geopark, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, was designated as a local geopark.

The Departmental Committee on the Promotion of Geological Heritage Conservation and Geoparks was appointed.

Satun Geopark, Satun Province, was designated as the first National Geopark of Thailand.

Petrified Wood Geopark, Tak Province, was designated as a local geopark.

The Ministerial Committee on the Promotion of Geological Heritage Conservation and Geoparks was appointed.

Khon Kaen Geopark, Khon Kaen Province, was designated as a local geopark.

Satun Geopark, Satun Province, was designated as Thailand’s first UNESCO Global Geopark

Phetchabun Geopark, Phetchabun Province, was designated as a local geopark.

Korat Geopark, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, was designated as a National Geopark of Thailand.

(currently renamed Ubon Ratchathani Geopark).

Phetchabun Geopark, Phetchabun Province, was designated as a National Geopark of Thailand

Khon Kaen Geopark, Khon Kaen Province, was designated as a National Geopark of Thailand.

The National Committee on Geoparks was appointed.

Chaiyaphum Geopark, Chaiyaphum Province, was designated as a local geopark.

Satun UNESCO Global Geopark was revalidated by UNESCO for an additional four-year period.

Phu Hang Nak Geopark, Suphan Buri Province, was designated as a local geopark.

Lampang Geopark, Lampang Province, was designated as a local geopark.

Satun UNESCO Global Geopark hosted the 7th Asia-Pacific Geoparks Network Symposium.

Kalasin Geopark, Kalasin Province, was designated as a local geopark.

Korat Geopark, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, was designated as Thailand’s second UNESCO Global Geopark.

Chiang Rai Geopark, Chiang Rai Province, was designated as a local geopark.
